Dear Ms. Logan:

I am reporting an incidence of class disruption by a student of my CIV E 445 class "Applied Hydrology," that meets Mondays and Wednesdays from 14:00 to 15:15 in GMCS-306. The student's name is John Prince (Red ID 802907099), and the incident occurred on March 16, 2005.

I will proceed to briefly describe the occurrence.

At the beginning of the class, I described a site that I had created recently to design colors on the web. Mr. Prince raised his hand, and asked "Prof. Ponce, what does this have to do with hydrology?" I was surprised by the negative tone of the question, since I always share my work on the web with my students. I answered: "As a matter of fact, nothing." At this point, another student raised his hand and said: "Prof. Ponce, I want you to know that many of us appreciate the work you do on the web." At this point, Mr. Prince stood up and left the classroom visibly upset, and did not return that day.

This event comes on the heels of three other previous similar incidents on the part of Mr. Prince in the same class. Again, he asked questions in an inapropriate tone and manner. After the second incident on March 9, I met with him and advised him that he should refrain from engaging in such disruptive behavior in the classroom. Yet, there was a third incident of a question posed in an inappropriate tone and manner on March 14.

On Friday, March 18, Mr. Prince saw me on campus in front of the Engineering Building, and proceeded to apologize, stating that he was confused. I told him that things had gone too far, and an apology was not enough.

I state these facts in order to place them on the record. Please advise on the proper course of action to insure that Mr. Prince is made aware of his rights and responsibilities and that incidents like these do not recur.

Sincerely yours,

Victor M. Ponce
