CIVE 495 - CIVIL ENGINEERING DESIGN

FALL 2002

DESIGN OF OXIDATION POND

PROBLEM:    Lack of proper sanitation in city of Tlaxiaco has led to pollution of neighboring streams.

STRATEGY:    To develop a low-cost, sustainable solution to provide sanitation to the city of approximately 10,000 people.

OBJECTIVES:    Choose the gravity-fed oxidation-pond solution, to treat to primary standards.

EXPANSION: This project can be expanded later with a constructed wetland downstream, to treat wastewater to secondary standards.

METHODOLOGY:    Use the Wilhelm-Werner equation to size oxidation pond.

DATA NEEDS:

  • Topography, siting

  • Sewage loads

  • Wind direction

  • Temperature

  • Unit costs of construction

DESIGN FEATURES:

  • Aerobic pond

  • Provide sufficient dispersion to encourage plug flow (low dispersion number)

  • Longitudinal orientation to enable mixing

  • Provide alternative sanitation to control size and cost of facility (ecological latrines)
