The difference between hydrology and hydraulics continues to fascinate me. In 1991, I attended an ASCE
conference in San Francisco, and met a colleague who was working for a leading engineering firm.
He had gotten his Ph.D. at a very reputable hydraulics school in the midwest, and had risen in the ranks to become section head.
When I took a look at his business card, it read: "John Doe, Chief Hydrologic Engineer." I could not resist asking him:
"John, what do you know about hydrology?"
To which he responded, smiling: "Not much, but it sells better than hydraulics."
