HOMEWORK No. 3

  1. The bottom of a certain 320-km reach of Clearwater river can be described by the following longitudinal profile:

    y = 100 e-0.000006x

    in which y = elevation with reference to an arbitrary datum, in meters; and x = horizontal distance measured from the upstream end of the reach, in meters. Calculate the S2 slope.

  2. A 35-ha catchment experiences 5 cm of precipitation, uniformly distributed in 2 hr. The time of concentration is 1 hr. What is the maximum possible flow rate at the catchment outlet?

  3. The following data has been measured in a certain hydraulically wide river: mean velocity: 1.8 m3/s; hydraulic radius: R = 3.2 m; mean channel slope: S = 0.0005. Calculate: (1) Manning fiction coefficient; (2) Chezy friction coefficient; (3) friction factor f; and (4) Darcy-Weisbach friction factor fD.

  4. Calculate the range of discharges given by the Creager formula for a drainage basin of area A = 908 km2. Verify with CREAGER.
