CIV E 638 - SEDIMENTATION AND RIVER ENGINEERING
FALL 2020
HOMEWORK No. 5:  MODIFIED EINSTEIN PROCEDURE

Use the Modified Einstein Procedure (onlinemodifiedeinstein.php) to calculate the total sediment load for the following river data, corresponding to the Upper Paraguay river at Porto Murtinho, Mato Grosso, Brazil.

  • Discharge Q = 1555 m3/s

  • Mean velocity u = 0.6 m/s

  • Average depth d = 12.3 m

  • Width w = 220 m

  • Water temperature t = 22°C

  • Diameter D65 = 0.3 mm

  • Diameter D35 = 0.15 mm

  • Measured concentration C = 345 ppm

  • Vertical distance not sampled = 1 m

  • Mean water level at sampled verticals = 12.5 m

The fraction of bed material in each size range is: 0.,0.,0.35,0.40,0.15,0.05,0.03,0.02,0.

The percentage of suspended material in each size range is: 23.,27.,40.,10.,0.,0.,0.,0.,0.

(a) Use the USBR (1955) Z' mode of computation.
(b) Compare with the USBR (1966) Z' mode of computation.
