Environmental Engineering is a branch of Civil Engineering that deals with
the study, prevention, mitigation, and control of pollution of the air, soil, and water on the Earth.
Pollution is a chemical "out of place," that is, a chemical in a place where it does not naturally belong,
or existing in quantities (concentrations) sufficiently high to harm the rest of the ecosystem, either temporarily or
permanently.
